 The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has backed announcements by supermarkets across the UK of a two pence per litre (ppl) reduction in petrol and diesel prices.

"This is good news for the motorist," said RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning. "However, by their very nature, heavy goods vehicles are unable to take advantage of these cuts, quite simply because they are not allowed onto supermarket forecourts."

 Airflow Truck Company in the US has unveiled a new design of big rig truck that could dramatically improve fuel efficiency for UK freight services providers if put into use.

The new 'Supertruck' is currently under construction, but the manufacturer claims the chassis of the vehicle has been designed in such a way to reduce aerodynamic drag by as much as 63 per cent over regular lorries.

 The Olympics will have a more significant impact on the UK freight sector than many people presently realise, it has been claimed.

Road Haulage Association director of policy Jack Semple said customers should expect significantly higher charges for deliveries during the period of the Games due to the increased difficulties there will be in getting orders to their destinations on time.

 Ongoing high prices for diesel in the UK have added an additional £1.3 billion on to the cost of diesel bills for operators in the UK haulage industry, it has been revealed.

According to figures from the Freight Transport Association (FTA), a 12p per litre rise in the cost of diesel has been seen on average over the last 12 months and this has put a significant strain on the UK freight sector.

 A new trailer design has been created by German vehicle manufacturer Goldhofer that could help to improve fuel efficiency and ease of use for UK freight operators and European freight firms too.

The vehicle features a remote-control steering system, removable power-toe ramps for long loads and a built-in floodlighting system for easier loading and off-road driving, all designed to make the day-to-day activities of drivers that much easier.
