The creation of greener fuels is something that could be a step closer at present after researchers have discovered a technique that could see cattle at the heart of a fuel breakthrough.

Work by ARK-Genomics at Edinburgh's Roslin Institute, life sciences company Ingenza and Professor John Wallace from the Rowett Institute in Aberdeen is presently focusing on the enzymnes in cow's stomachs and whether these could be used to break down complex molecules into green fuel sources, the BBC reports.

Dr Ian Fotheringham, president of Ingenza, said: "If we can identify novel enzymes that allow ruminants to break down these tough structures, and then replicate them on a large scale, the possibilities for more sustainable and renewable industrial practices are enormous."

Meanwhile, fuel prices In the UK continue to climb, despite the fact the wholesale price of oil has fallen in recent months.

As a result, campaigns such as FairFuelUK are gaining support, with the government being strongly urged to look into the situation.
