Haulage workers and freight services have suffered another blow as the Petrol Retailers Association (RMI Petrol) has reported that diesel prices soared by 10p a litre in the past 12 months.

It is a seven per cent rise from 2010 and leaves current prices standing at 143.05p per litre. Many freight organisations have planned strikes against the increase.

Workers in the Republic of Ireland are preparing to go on strike in the streets of Dublin after the country's government failed to introduce a levy allowing a discount on fuel for long-haul drivers.

Brian Madderson, RMI Petrol chairman, has said that prices are now 3.6 per cent above the consumer price index and the March Budget is the "perfect opportunity" for chancellor George Osborne to introduce a reduction on the fuel duty.

He said: "This record price for diesel, plus the rising costs of petrol, means household budgets, big business and small and medium sized operators are all being squeezed by these high fuel prices."
