Ongoing high prices for diesel in the UK have added an additional £1.3 billion on to the cost of diesel bills for operators in the UK haulage industry, it has been revealed.
According to figures from the Freight Transport Association (FTA), a 12p per litre rise in the cost of diesel has been seen on average over the last 12 months and this has put a significant strain on the UK freight sector.
James Hookham, the FTA's managing director of policy and communications, said: "Times are very tough right now, with rising oil costs and limited cash flow conspiring to make survival rather than growth the number one priority for many businesses operating trucks."
Indeed, the FTA noted that the typical annual cost of fuelling just one 44-tonne truck for a year has risen to £5,700.
Meanwhile, the FairFuelUK lobby group recently took its case to Downing Street, when MPs discussed the impact of ongoing high fuel costs in the UK and promised the creation of a new commission to look into the matter.
