Olympics 'will drive up haulage costs in UK'

4th Aug 2011

The Olympics will have a more significant impact on the UK freight sector than many people presently realise, it has been claimed.

Road Haulage Association director of policy Jack Semple said customers should expect significantly higher charges for deliveries during the period of the Games due to the increased difficulties there will be in getting orders to their destinations on time.

A massive influx of people will be heading into London in particular, but other areas of the country will also see increased congestion as hundreds of thousands of people visit the UK to support their home nation.

He commented: "Businesses in London should be aware that congestion is likely to impact on goods moving out of the capital, as well as in-bound deliveries."

Meanwhile, Mr Semple also recently argued that two of the biggest issues presently facing UK freight operators are a lack of investment in the country's roads and increasing levels of congestion.

He argued that the problems for the industry are only getting worse, as a lack of access to funds in the small to medium-sized enterprise sector is also strangling the industry.
