A weather-prone stretch of motorway on the Transpennine route is set to have snow gates installed to prevent future road accidents.
The Highways Agency plans to put up the barriers on the A628 Woodhead Pass between South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. It is hoped that this new measure will help improve safety for drivers and freight services alike.
Police forces in partnership with the road organisation will operate the gates manually and will be backed with mobile electronic signs to warn drivers when the road is shut at a cost of £250,000.
With the UK being gripped by snow and ice over the past two months the Highways Agency is aiming to reduce the amount of collisions on the usually busy and exposed road.
Sujad Hussain, the organisation's project manager said: "The new gates and signs will help us do this more [improve safety] efficiently and the warning signs mean that drivers will have more time to plan alternative routes."
The gates will be in operation by the end of March.
