The rise of internet shopping means that 2 man delivery companies will come under increasing pressure over the next few Christmases.

Research from Global Freight Solutions (GFS) showed that the number of deliveries rose by 15 per cent last festive period, with e-tail accounting for 37 per cent of the total number of items which are handled by couriers.

GFS said that this figure was set to increase to 50 per cent by Christmas 2016, which could lead to the industry making significant changes.

Simon Veale, director of the organisation, said: "A decade ago, consumers were responsible for approximately ten per cent of the Christmas parcel peak. The increase that we’ve witnessed since has predominantly been caused by internet shopping and much of that has come after 2006, when e-commerce began to really gain in popularity."

According to IMRG, the UK is leading the way with e-retail in Europe, with sales estimated to have reached around £68.2 billion last year.
